Who owns it?

The Mapula Trust is the property owner, that has given AfrikaBurn the use of the property in usufruct*. The main objectives supported by the Trust are the preservation of the natural environment, environmental education, education itself, and animal welfare.

One of the primary objectives of the Mapula Trust is the preservation and stewardship of parcels of land with a biodiversity value.

What is usufruct, and what does it mean in terms of AfrikaBurn’s use of the property?

The definition of a usufruct is ‘a legal right given by an owner to someone who is not the owner, to use the owner’s property for a certain period.’

The agreement reached with the Mapula Trust grants AfrikaBurn permission to hold the AfrikaBurn event and any other initiatives that effect and further the objectives of the organisation in accordance with our 11 guiding principles.
